What Makes a Wig Hairline Look Natural?

By far the most crucial part of real hair wigs is the hairline. Assuming you don’t have a full bang cut into your wig (which is the ultimate illusion to make a wig look seamless, but not everyone’s first style choice), you are probably obsessed with how people are looking at your hairline. It is the area of your wig that is most exposed to other people seeing you face on. As one of the premier wig shops in Toronto, our boutique would rank this as the number one area of concern for all clients who don’t wear a hairstyle with full bangs.

Everyone’s natural hairline is uniquely individual, almost like a fingerprint. There are obvious limitations to making a wig as unique as your bio hairline. When designing and making hairlines for real hair wigs, we are constrained not only by fabric, the need to attach hair to fabric, and the idiosyncrasies of the client’s forehead shape, but we predominantly need to create a hair system that can be easily attached, removed, and maintained by the client without requiring a team of professional makeup/wig artists that a screen actor would have the luxury of having.

The following is a list of our main tools for creating the perfect wig hairline:

  • Fabric
When designing a hairline, the fabric of choice for the best wig shops in Toronto is Swiss lace. The fineness and translucency of lace melt into the wearer’s skin. Although it is also the most delicate fabric wig makers use, with proper care, a lace top or front can be surprisingly long-lasting.
  • Hair
Human hair strands are measured in micrometers. The smaller the number, the finer the hair. Fine hair is the best choice for a natural-looking hairline. In a lace top/front wig, each hair is individually knotted into the lace. A thicker strand of hair will reveal a larger knot, which is more visible to the viewer’s eye. When constructing real hair wigs, we always single out the thinnest, finest hair for fashioning a natural-looking hairline.
  • Colour
Colour is another tool we can utilize when building a convincing-looking hairline. Observe a bio hairline and notice that often the finer hair of a person‘s natural hair is slightly lighter than the bulk of their hair. The knot of lighter hair is also more “invisible“ than the knot of darker hair.
  • Textured Hair/Baby Hair
The human eye is attracted to straight lines, so creating a little messiness at the edge of a hairline is often enough to distract the eye of a casual observer. Choosing to tie in a small amount of shorter, textured hair in a hairline (commonly known as baby hair) is yet another trick in the art of illusion.

To make very natural-looking real hair wigs requires a great deal of experience, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. When looking for wig shops in Toronto, be sure to consider how experienced the wigmakers are at constructing hairlines and whether they can make on-site customizations and alterations.
