Can I Sleep in My Human Hair, Custom-made Wig?
Paula's Wig Boutique

There are many reasons that would make someone want to sleep in their wig. You might not be public about the fact that you wear a wig, and finding yourself in situations where you’ll be sharing a room with another person or making communal sleeping arrangements can be very stressful. In this blog post, we will discuss the drawbacks of sleeping in a custom-made wig, be they mechanical, practical, financial, or health-related, as well as provide some practical solutions.

Paula’s Wig Boutique prides itself on being the best wig store in Toronto for human hair and custom-made wigs. Educating our clients and the wig-wearing community on practical day-to-day wig-wearing issues has always been a priority.

The most obvious reason to avoid sleeping in your wig is that the amount of knotting and tangling will be exponentially greater than just from regular day-to-day wear. Friction is not your wig’s best friend. It is the reason that you may find the most tangling at the nape of the neck area of your wig. This is a direct result of the constant friction of hair against your clothing. Particularly, custom-made wigs that are produced using “living hair” (also known as cuticle hair) will readily tangle from much friction.

This obvious drawback leads to another disadvantage: increased wig maintenance time. As a wig wearer myself and the owner of the best wig store in Toronto, one of the biggest perks of wearing beautiful, custom-made wigs is the amount of time I save getting ready in the morning. My hair is always ready to go, and I never have a bad hair day. Sleeping in a wig undermines this incredible advantage. Particularly if you are a one-wig kind of gal, your morning routine becomes considerably more involved.

If you have decided that investing in the finest human hair and custom-made wigs is right for you, it would be worthwhile to consider how much sleeping in your wig affects its lifespan. Clocking in an additional 8 to 10 hours of wear on your wig (particularly heavy wear, such as sleeping) can lessen the lifespan of your wig anywhere from 50% to 75%. The choice to sleep or not to sleep in your wig may very well be a financial one.

I believe the most important problem to address when sleeping in your wig is the issue of health. The fundamental building block of good health is good sleep. Sleeping in a wig is never as comfortable as without.  We spend on average a third of our lives sleeping, and getting a good night’s rest is essential to achieving and maintaining good health. The few times I have chosen to sleep in my wig or accidentally fallen asleep wearing it did not result in restful sleep. You want to be completely relaxed when you go to bed, and being conscious of how you sleep will undermine relaxation. It is also really important to give the sensitive skin of your scalp a break from being covered all the time. Constant wig wear is positively associated with skin irritation. Once you get a rash, it’s really hard to get rid of it, especially if it’s constantly covered. In my years of operating the best wig store in Toronto, I have seen some pretty nasty scalp conditions, from contact dermatitis to fungus to full-on infections.

Here are some practical solutions to make sleeping in your wig potentially less problematic:

  1. Be comfortable in your skin. Do whatever it takes to come to terms with being a wig wearer. Finding a good support group can go a long way. Although not a solution for everyone, it certainly takes care of every problem associated with sleeping in a wig.
  2. Designate a sleeping wig: Consider choosing a super comfortable wig for sleeping in that you won’t wear during the day to avoid extra maintenance.
  3. Consider a synthetic: Although I am a custom-made wig purist, I can see the utility of buying a few cheap synthetic wigs for heavy activity, such as exercise and sleep.
  4. Decrease friction: Use a silk pillowcase to help cut down on knotting and tangling.
  5. Embrace the headwrap: there are some beautiful cloth head coverings that are easy to wash and are super comfortable, light, and breathable. If you are suffering from complete hair loss, they also help to keep your head warm. This is a considerably more comfortable choice than a wig.

I hope this blog of tips and tricks was helpful, and we look forward to continuing to be the best wig store in Toronto, dedicated to restoring women’s confidence.

❤Paula

If you have decided to invest in human hair wigs, it’s very important to learn how to care for them to ensure longevity and a flawless look. Just like your own bio hair will start to look limp, frizzy, and unkempt if it’s not maintained properly, human hair wigs also require very specific TLC to keep them looking their best. As one of the many wig stores in Miami, Paulas Wig Boutique has spent countless hours perfecting the maintenance of human hair wigs. Please refer to our instructional video tutorial to follow along in real time.

Step #1: De-tangle

Brushing out your wig after each wear is a great habit to get into, and this is how we recommend starting the process of washing your human hair wigs. Begin by brushing your wig from tip to root using a paddle brush. Brushing from tip to root will ensure a minimal amount of tearing and hair loss. This will also help to minimise split ends. Once you’ve finished detangling, place your wig on a Styrofoam wig form and secure it with t-pins at the sides and nape of the neck.

Step #2: Shampoo

Before shampooing your human hair wig, thoroughly soak the hair using a showerhead or extendible kitchen vegetable washer. The water should be warm to lukewarm and should flow in one direction (from top to bottom). Once your wig is thoroughly wet, place a small amount of shampoo in your hands and gently stroke it through the hair in one direction (from top to bottom). Take care not to massage or agitate the hair but rather adopt a stroking movement to thoroughly cover the shampoo throughout the hair. Thoroughly rinse the shampoo from your wig using the same technique as you did when originally soaking it in preparation for shampooing. The shampooing process can be repeated if your human hair wig is particularly dirty or has picked up a strong scent you wish to eliminate.

When choosing a quality shampoo for your human hair wigs, we strongly recommend sulphate-free products, as they will have less of a drying effect on natural hair.

Step 3: Condition

After all the shampoo is thoroughly rinsed from your wig, place a small amount of conditioner in your hands, and using the same technique as you did to apply the shampoo,
apply the conditioner. We recommend focusing the majority of conditioner on the bottom half of your human hair wigs, as this is the driest part of the hair and requires the most TLC. Leaving the conditioner or mask on the hair for a minimum of five minutes will result in super-silky hair. Predictably, rinsing the conditioner out of the wig is the same as rinsing out the shampoo. Always remember to have the water flowing from top to bottom.

We know that there are many wig stores in Miami and probably just as many methods for washing wigs; however, our experience working with high-end human hair wigs for over 27 years has resulted in this very specific method, which ensures the most safe and effective way to clean human hair wigs.

Step #4: Drying

Before removing your human hair wig from the Styrofoam head, gently squeeze out the majority of the water using your hands, followed by a gentle patting through using an absorbent towel (Life Hack!—skipping the fabric softener when washing your towels makes them much more absorbent). After this step, it’s your choice to apply serum, mousse, gel, or any styling products you wish. We generally brush out our human hair wigs directly on the Styrofoam head before removing them. In fact, in our wig store in Miami and our wig store in Toronto, we allow the human hair wigs to dry directly on the Styrofoam head. Depending on the specific style of wig, you may not even need to use any hot tools after the wig is dried.

How often should you wash your human hair wigs?

There are many things to consider when calculating the frequency of washing your human hair wigs.

The first thing to consider is the type of activity you are doing regularly while wearing your human hair wig. If you are in a hot climate or tend to perspire a lot, you will need to wash your wig more frequently. Conversely, if you are sedentary and tend not to perspire, you can probably push off washing your wig for longer. A general rule of thumb is that if you work an office job and remove your wig before cooking, sleeping, or being involved in physical activity, you can probably get away with 100 to 120 hours of wear, or every 2 weeks. You have to consider several variables when deciding to wash your human hair wigs; most are common sense. Clearly, if you engage in aerobic activity and perspire a lot, you will likely need to wash your wig
after each workout (we highly recommend designating a wig of lesser value for exercise). If you are a smoker, you will also need to wash your human hair wigs frequently (at least weekly).

If you are looking for more information about wig maintenance and are looking for wig stores in Miami, please feel free to take advantage of Paula’s Wig Boutique’s free, no-obligation consultation. We are always happy to answer your questions related to human hair wigs.

I’m a board-certified OB/GYN with a fellowship in anti-aging and functional medicine. After transitioning from OB/GYN to practicing in wellness programs, I became ill. I was diagnosed with a rare cancer. On my first appointment at a major cancer center, I was told to call my family and that I would probably survive about one month. Eight years and a long list of treatments later, I am in complete remission. I feel well.

I’m a doctor, a patient, and a cancer survivor. I am now in a unique position to empathize with, advocate for, and medically support patients. Without my ability to understand and participate in medical decisions during my eight-year journey, I know I would not have survived. The one-month prediction, had I accepted it, could have become a reality.

Most patients do not have this advantage. Patients and their families listen to experts and react to the expectations they are given. Certainly, no one is in complete control of the outcome of this devastating illness. Sometimes, however, we can affect the outcome. When we cannot, we can still make beneficial decisions to give ourselves a better quality of life.

I hope to help patients prevent illness, including cancer, and to support patients along the journey. This means involvement and decisions about treatment, hopefully with support during recovery and remission. When patients are anxious, much of the information they are given cannot be digested, and important questions are not asked. Additionally, when patients’ treatments are completed, many are left to navigate their concerns alone, such as diet, supplements, exercise, sleep, and more.

Multiple treatments left me bald, and I was anxious to find a wig store that could help me find the best human hair wigs in Miami for my specific needs. I had blonde, naturally curly hair, and I knew finding natural hair wigs of that type would be difficult. I made several consultation appointments with various wig stores in Miami. The first one I went to was Paula’s Wig Boutique. I was greeted with such kindness, understanding, and expertise, which made me feel safe and well looked after. It’s a very important purchase, and so much about your confidence is wrapped up in your hair and how you look. When you can look and feel like yourself, you can begin to recapture your confidence and sense of well-being. It’s true that when you look good, you feel good. Needless to say, I cancelled all my other consultation appointments. I knew I had found the right place.

After eight years of chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants, tubes in my gallbladder and lungs, three years of IV nutrition, pacemaker, and port placement, amongst several other treatments, I feel that there is a reason that I’m here. It is to help others, both medically and emotionally, along their paths.

Going on Vacation with Your Wig: 11 Tips for Traveling with Wigs
Paula's Wig Boutique

Paula’s Wig Boutique has been providing the best human hair wigs in Toronto for over 25 years. As the premier human hair wig store in Toronto, we have invested great effort in making the finest bespoke real hair wigs as well as creating a sense of community where fellow wearers share their experiences, tips, and tricks to make wig-wearing more enjoyable.

Let’s face it, travelling is both a joy and a pain. Everyone loves the idea of going on vacation, but the logistics can add to the “pain” part of vacationing. Add to that all the possible issues that can arise from travelling with human hair wigs, and you may very well have the recipe for a less-than-perfect holiday. The following blog represents the best tips we have learned over years of making real hair wigs in Toronto about vacationing with your wig from personal and clients’ experiences.

1. Packing your wig for travel:

If you’re not wearing your wig on your journey or you are taking a backup piece, knowing how to pack it is important. There are some lovely pieces of wig luggage on the market that come with their own removable wig form (styrofoam head), which is the Rolls-Royce of packing options. Our main reason for discouraging using wig luggage is the possibility of the airline not allowing it to go as a carry-on. The dimensions of wig luggage are sometimes quite bulky, and with the constantly changing standards of acceptable carry-on sizes, we just don’t think it’s worth the risk of having to send your wig in cargo. The best option we have found is to travel with a small cardboard box in which your wig is gently folded. Choose a size that easily fits into your carry-on. We strongly recommend against packing your wig in your luggage because of the possibility of loss. Cardboard is a natural fibre that discourages static, so avoid packing your wig in plastic.

2. Freshly wash and set your wig before packing:

There’s nothing like wearing a clean wig, and starting your vacation with a freshly washed piece will go a long way.

3. Choose a wig that requires minimal or no styling:

We love our wash-and-wear styles when we travel! Our favourites are loose, messy waves, naturally curly, and silky straight. The advantage of these styles is that you can easily rewash these wigs and let them air dry. No one wants to travel with a suitcase full of hairstyling tools. Our motto is “Keep it simple.” If you love your wig even when it’s so dirty that it’s almost walking off your head, that’s the wig to take on vacation. Wash-and-wear styles are the easiest to pack and look great even after sitting in a cardboard box for several hours.

4. Protect your wig from the elements:

No one can accurately predict the weather, but being ready for the unexpected is a good idea, especially if you are a wig wearer. Sunny destinations come with their own set of issues, and humidity is probably the one that most people struggle with. Choosing an anti-humidity spray is a must when going to warmer climates. Of all the brands we have tried so far, our absolute favourite is Umbrella by Cotril. Spray this on your wig every morning before wearing it, and the effects of humidity are seriously mitigated. We have also found that this spray is wonderful in dry climates and keeps our wigs feeling soft and freshly washed. Getting stuck in a sudden torrential downpour without an umbrella is perhaps one of every wig wearer’s worst nightmares, but if you travel with a wash-and-wear type of style, leaving it to dry on a wig form overnight should be enough.

5. Take a wig stand:

It’s not likely that the place you’ll be staying comes equipped with a styrofoam head to leave your wig on when you’re not wearing it. If you have room in your luggage to pack a short styrofoam head, that’s ideal; however, collapsible wig stands work almost as well. They are quite inexpensive and are available to purchase at most quality wig stores as well as online. In a pinch, you can also use a litre-sized bottle of soda. Never hang your wig on a wall sconce, as too many times people forget and turn on the light. The result is a giant hole burned into the top of your wig. That’s the perfect way to ruin your vacation.

6. Give it a break:

If possible, try not to sleep in your wig. It’s great to give your wig as well as your scalp 10 to 12 hours to air out. Although this is not always possible, sleeping in your wig will require more frequent washing and styling and will shorten the life of your wig.

7. Swimming with my wig:

Swimming in your wig is not ideal, particularly if you have a high-end real-hair wig. Chlorine and strong sunshine are damaging to your hairpiece. Consider using a bathing cap, or if you absolutely must wear a wig, consider using an accessory wig, such as a hat fall coupled with a large sun hat or extra-large hairband. This still doesn’t allow you to go underwater; however, it’s perfect for soaking and sunning. If you’re planning on doing laps, invest in a cute bathing cap.

8. Wearing a wig on the plane:

Going through security wearing a wig is a really common concern for our clients, particularly those that have metal clips inside their wigs that attach to their bio hair. The concern is that the metal clips or combs will set off the metal detector. If this happens and you are female, it’s always a female agent who will take you aside and check on you. If she asks to touch your head, just politely tell her that you wear a wig and it has clips. I have never experienced or heard of anyone experiencing an agent requiring them to remove their wig. If you are particularly concerned about setting off a metal detector, consider having your metal hardware removed and using a wig grip instead.

9. Take a backup:

Please, please, please, never rely on only one wig. If you wear prescription glasses, you would never consider travelling without a backup pair. Your wig is almost as important. If anything happens, you need to know that you can always rely on a second (and I like to take a third as well!) piece to see you through your travels. A couple of fabric hair coverings are also a great option as backups.

10. Keep wig care products in leak-proof containers and a Ziplock bag:

This may seem self-evident, but I’m pretty sure everyone has a story of some goo or potion leaking in their suitcase. If you’re taking these products in your carry-on, be sure to check that they are not over the allowable amount of liquid. It’s extremely frustrating to have your valuable and, more importantly, necessary products taken away from you at security. Pack them in your luggage if they are over the limit, or transfer them into small travel-size containers. Don’t forget to put everything in an extra Ziploc bag.

11. Remember your dryer sheet:

One of our favourite wig hacks is the dryer sheet. Hair can become “staticky” depending on the environment or weather (think dry winter weather), and a dryer sheet is an instant cure-all. The straighter the hair, the more it is affected by static. A quick pass over with a dryer sheet and the static.

These top 11 tips have been invaluable for us and our clients when traveling. We hope this information is helpful, and we wish you a safe and pleasant journey!!

Wig Confidence: Empowering Women Through Hair
Paula's Wig Boutique

Paula’s Wig Boutique Miami is the latest addition to our family of bespoke wig shops, with our motto of “restoring women’s confidence.” When we chose to open our location in Florida, we were well aware of the numerous wig shops in Miami but also that there was a noticeable lack of bespoke, human-hair wigs in Miami. Long-lasting, versatile wigs certainly come at a premium; however, the investment in confidence is perhaps one of the most important ones a woman makes for herself.

How is a woman empowered through her hair, and what is wig confidence? To understand this, let us first understand what confidence is.

Confidence is a feeling of self-assurance that comes from an appreciation of one’s abilities or qualities—internal and external. It is something that can come from a feeling of being in control, and hair gives a woman the ability to exert that control. Because a woman’s bio hair may not be healthy or sufficient enough for her to achieve that sense of mastery over her appearance, a wig or hairpiece is an effective tool to help her project the image of herself she wishes others to see.

For many women, their hair serves as an expression of their health and even their spirituality. We are all familiar with the concept of “breaking up hair.”  It gives a woman a chance to reinvent herself and bury what she no longer wants to be while being in control of what she aspires to be.

A study was done at Yale University to explore the psychology behind bad hair days. Participants stated that bad hair days made them “feel less smart, less capable, and sociable, but more embarrassed.” Most women don’t need a study from Yale University to tell them that when they’re unhappy with their hair, it triggers feelings of low self-esteem and other negative emotions.

It seems that, as a species, we are hardwired to be attracted to healthy hair. Looking and feeling young is desirable not only for ourselves but also when looking for a potential mate. It’s clear that men look for women who outwardly exude vitality, and healthy hair is a significant sign of how vital a woman is. To put it bluntly, men are biologically wired to procreate, and as such, they search for a vital mate who can facilitate their instinct to further their genes.

Practically speaking, over half of women over the age of 40 experience some kind of hair loss, which is often associated with low self-confidence. There are many recommendations on how to maintain your confidence while losing your hair. Some of these suggestions are:

  • FDA medications (very low success rate)
  • Hair transplantation surgery (painful, expensive, and requires you to have enough bio-hair to transplant; you cannot use a donor)
  • Therapy for depression and anxiety
  • Hair extensions, hairpieces, and wigs

The path to discovering the perfect solution for each individual woman is a unique one, and as suppliers of human hair wigs in Miami, we’ve witnessed women at every step along this journey. Frequently, our clients have explored all avenues before ultimately considering wig shops in Miami. Women experiencing significant hair loss due to medical issues often seek a swift and dependable solution to their challenges. No matter where a woman is on her journey, Paula’s Wig Boutique is committed to providing support to help restore confidence and empower women through their hair.

Inside Paula’s Wig Boutique: Crafting Human Hair Wigs in Toronto
Paula's Wig Boutique

Have you ever wondered what is involved in making a wig? Has anyone ever pointed out a wig to you and you were shocked at how natural and seamless it looked? It’s the ones that you don’t notice that are truly works of art.

My name is Paula Bisk, and I am the owner and founder of Paula’s Wig Boutique, which has been designing and manufacturing human hair wigs in Toronto since 1999. I would love to take you through a day in the life at our weekly workshop.

Before I begin, let me introduce you to the different specialists who are required to produce the highest-quality wigs in Toronto. On any given day, our team consists of:

  • Ventilators
  • Seamstresses
  • Wefters
  • Hairdressers
  • Colourists
  • Wig consultants

It’s a pretty big team, but every job is essential to creating the highest-quality human hair wigs in Toronto. Let’s understand what each team member does in their respective jobs.

Ventilators

These are wig artisans that specialise in hand-tying each strand of hair into various types of lace and fabric. This is by far the most time-consuming and tedious job. It requires a large amount of experience, patience, and the ability to sit in one spot comfortably for a long time.

Seamstresses

Our seamstresses specialise in base construction, fitting, and attaching microwefts to caps.

Wefters

A person who wefts is a specialised wigmaker that exclusively creates micro wefts out of raw hair. This can be done by hand or by sewing machine.

Wefted hair allows us to attach a greater amount of hair to a base in significantly less time. Wefted hair is also easier to repair.

Hairdressers

Human hair wigs require very experienced hairdressers to complete the job of making the perfect wig, ensuring that the cut and style are suitable for our clients. Our motto is “The hair on a wig does not grow back.“ There isn’t room for error, and as such, our hairdressers are hyper-aware of the value of each human hair wig and take the job of cutting a hairpiece with a great deal of seriousness.

Colourists

On any given day we employ two wig colourists who are specially trained in highlighting and dying human hair wigs. In general, the demand for exceptional colour and highlight services in the salon industry has increased exponentially. This is also true for wigs, for which a colour service not only takes approximately triple the amount of time but also requires a very delicate touch. As we always say, “The hair on a wig does not grow back.”

Mistakes are costly, so the demands on our colourists and hairdressers are quite high.

Wig Consultants

Ever since we started making wigs in Toronto, Paula‘s Wig Boutique has always employed an actual wig wearer to conduct consultations. The consultant is well-versed in the art of wearing wigs and is extremely empathetic to the challenges of wearing a wig or hairpiece, having experienced the difficulties herself. Our consultant also acts as our clients’ personal trainer and educator on how to wear, wash, store, and maintain wigs or hairpieces.

Every member of our team is essential to creating the ultimate in bespoke human hair wigs. Our day starts well before our clients start to arrive and finishes well after we have seen our last client. Each wig requires anywhere from 40 to 100 hours of labour, and each piece is unique. Producing exceptional human hair wigs in Toronto has been a labour of love for well over two decades. We consider each wig or hairpiece that we design and create as we view each one of our clients—one of a kind.

Our boutique boasts a large stock of readymade pieces so you don’t have to completely leave it to your imagination. After your consultation you are welcome to give us the go ahead or spend some time considering the options you are offered. A follow up appointment can be booked whether you choose to make a purchase or wish to have some time to consider.

Your second appointment may involve fitting, color consultation, or cutting. We generally expect 1-2 return visits after your first consultation.

In a world where personal style takes center stage, the excitement surrounding high-end bespoke ladies’ hair pieces and wigs has never been bigger. At Paula’s Wig Boutique, we know the transformative potential that human hair toppers can make to your overall appearance.

Human Hair Toppers for Women: Unmatched Quality and Seamless Integration

Our human hair toppers are a testament to unwavering quality. Meticulously crafted, each piece seamlessly blends with your natural hair, creating a flawless, undetectable look. A beautiful head of hair can significantly boost a woman’s self-confidence, and our toppers, made with virgin European hair, mimic the natural movement of your own bio hair, taking your style to new heights.

The Artistry of Bespoke Elegance

Paula’s Wig Boutique takes pride in our dedication to bespoke craftsmanship. Our highly trained wigmakers and stylists are skilled artisans who carefully design and tailor each hairpiece to match your needs, preferences, and lifestyle. Whether you seek a subtle enhancement or a bold transformation, our team understands that each woman is unique and is committed to helping clients achieve their style goals.

Wigs in Toronto, Ontario: Where Glamour Meets Craftsmanship

Located in the heart of Toronto, Ontario, Paula’s Wig Boutique has been creating human hair wigs and hairpieces for over 27 years. Finding wigs in Toronto can be daunting for first-time wearers. At Paula’s Wig Boutique, we acknowledge the delicacy of this process and offer a free first-time, no-obligation consultation with one of our professional wig representatives. They patiently guide you through the intricacies of toppers in our private consultation rooms, ensuring a respectful and private experience.

Beyond Aesthetics: The Comfort of Human Hair Toppers

While looking good is a top priority, comfort is equally crucial. Contrary to the common notion of “Beauty is pain,” our team understands that wearing an uncomfortable hairpiece all day is not sustainable. We are well-versed in the art of wig-wearing and can assist you in choosing the most practical hairpiece for your needs. If hair loss is extensive, a lightweight wig might be a better choice. Our wig representatives are here to help you make the best decision for you in a pleasant, judgment-free environment.

Essential Care Tips for Human Hair Wigs
Paula's Wig Boutique

Whether you’re exploring wigs for style versatility or coping with hair loss due to aging, illness, or medical treatments, the right wig can boost self-image and confidence. Choosing between synthetic and human hair wigs depends on your preferences and needs.

Synthetic wigs are budget-friendly with minimal maintenance, while human hair wigs offer a natural feel, unlimited styling options, and durability. Considering the value for money, human hair wigs are an excellent investment if cared for properly. But how do you ensure your human hair wig stays in top condition?

Human Hair Wig Care Tips:

  1. Wash in lukewarm water, including the cap, without massaging.
  2. Use wig-specific products recommended by your provider.
  3. Apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends and rinse thoroughly.
  4. Gently move hands in one direction to avoid frizz while drying.
  5. Use a hair dryer on the cap’s inside until almost dry.
  6. Secure your wig on a stand for styling after drying.

Given human hair’s sensitivity to moisture and dryness, regular washing, styling, and application of nourishing products like serums and masks are essential. For personalized advice and premium human hair wigs in Miami, Florida, contact Paula’s Wig Boutique.
