Wig Washing 101

In case you don’t have the luxury of taking your wig to the salon for regular washing and styling, we have created our list of tips for best practices.

The Wash

  1. Always go for salon-grade products when choosing the correct products for washing human hair wigs and European hair toppers. The exact company is completely up to you. We love the Cotril line.
  2. Always brush human hair wigs, starting at the tips and slowly moving to the roots. You don’t want to be tugging excessively on tangles. Be gentle around the top of your hairpiece.
  3. Place your wig or topper on a foam head. Always wash on a form to ensure the best results and longevity of the hairpiece.
  4. Pin your European hair topper or wig to the foam head at the sides. Be careful not to poke pins through the scalp fabric.
  5. Rinse in warm water. A removable faucet or vegetable washer is easiest, but holding the head under a faucet also works.
  6. Shampoo your human hair wig, using gentle strokes, starting at the top of the wig. Do not scratch and scrub the way you might shampoo a human head. Strokes should always be in one direction (top to bottom).
  7. Rinse out shampoo
  8. Repeat steps 5-7.
  9. Use conditioner, focusing on the ends and tips; excessive conditioning on top is unnecessary. At this time, you may want to use a large paddle brush to distribute conditioner through the entire hairpiece.
  10. Rinse out conditioner
  11. Squeeze out excess water by hand and finish with a towel.
  12. Gently brush your human hair wig while it is still wet.
  13. Leave the hairpiece to dry on the foam head
  14. Once completely dry, proceed to style.

The Set

  1. Place your European hair topper or human hair wig on a styling head and stand (in a pinch, a willing participant such as a husband, boyfriend, son, etc. works, and I’ll make for excellent photo ops 😉)
  2. Style as you would style your own hair. We recommend high-quality products and equipment for the best results.
