How long will my wig last?
This question unfortunately doesn’t have an easy answer. There are so many different types of fibres on the market that wigs, and hairpieces are made from and their longevity depends on several factors other than fibre (aka hair). The longest-lasting wigs are definitely human hair wigs however even human hair wigs are not all the same. For example, if a wig is made with processed human hair (specifically hair that has had the cuticle removed).
The lifespan is greatly reduced as compared to unprocessed human hair. Human hair that is in its virgin state and not altered is by far the most durable and long-lasting. But when it comes down to it, it’s all about mileage. How many hours a day does the wearer clock on their wig, what sort of activity does the wearer put it through and how often is the unit being washed and styled?
All are very important factors and make a big difference in how long the wig lasts.
Another important question is how the wig is designed. If a wig is manufactured with exceptional hair quite often the foundation in which it is sewn gives up much quicker than the hair does. It is quite unfortunate to have to throw out a wig just because the foundation is unwearable, but the hair is still in good condition. To pull out the maximum number of years from a wig the optimal choice is one that is made of virgin human hair (unprocessed) and sewn into a base that can be replaced, if necessary, without compromising the hair.
